Being creative has always been an important part of my life. As an introvert, I’m the type of person that is not great at expressing their feelings through having conversations with others. After many years
I’ve discovered that creating is an emotional outlet for me, a way to deal with feelings about important causes and about myself.
I first began creating in elementary school through drawing with plain paper and pencils. At this point in my life, I never considered my need to create as the possible starting point to a career. In middle school, I moved from my grandparent’s home in Naschitti, NM, to Albuquerque. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to take actual art classes. I began to experiment with creating in as many mediums as I could, like photography, painting, and ceramics.
Experimenting with ceramics in high school would ultimately lead to getting my first job with ALMA in 2015. I remember the excitement I felt toward creating something large-scale with many other people like myself. That first summer job solidified for me how much I wanted to have a career in the arts and how realistic that notion could be. In 2016, I graduated from high school and decided to make an important move in my journey to having a creative career: art school. First, I had to decide on a major and because I love learning and experimenting. I chose Graphic Design which has allowed me to keep working with multiple mediums as well as learn a few new ones. I completed the majority of my BFA degree in Denver, CO, at the Rocky Mountain of College of Art + Design and graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2020. Through the last 6 six years of my life, ALMA has been a major part of my life. This summer marks my 5th summer with ALMA and I’ve grown up here, which is insane to think about. I’m very fortunate to still be working with this organization, to be another step closer to having a creative career, and to have learned more about myself in the process.
