For my first week at ALMA I have learned so much about working on large art projects in a group setting. While working on a large project as time consuming and long lasting as the one we are creating, it is important to make sure there is a solid plan before we actually begin on the tiles. Throughout the process of designing the mosaic I am learning so much about working with a group to come up with a design.  Everyone collaborates on it and has a say in the final product. I am also learning so much about different cultures and heritages through the intense research our group is doing. The research helps us figure out the various different symbols and ideas that will be incorporated in the design.

I have also begun to learn about the processes in making the actual tiles.  For example, the background tiles are thinner tiles made of random shapes used to fill in between the design elements. Then the actual design tiles are thicker and have three dimensional detail that can be added through carving directly into the clay or scoring and slipping other pieces onto the tile. Another thing that I am learning about is the different methods to organize and create the large amount of tile that goes into a project this size as efficiently as possible.
